Decoding Hansheng's innovative approach

2010-09-05

In the recent selection of "Top Ten Innovative Enterprises in Guangdong", Hansheng Technology Co., Ltd. was the only enterprise from Zhuhai among the 25 candidates. This globally important company in the coaxial communication cable field started 25 years ago as a small factory producing cables for foreign companies. Today, Hansheng's annual output value has increased from 3.65 million yuan at the beginning of production to 2.4 billion yuan in 2009, with fixed assets increasing 100 times, sales increasing 400 times, and profits and taxes increasing 500 times. It is the second largest in the world and the largest in Asia manufacturer and technology leader of radio frequency coaxial cables, and a national key high-tech enterprise.
What has led to Hansheng's success today? Hansheng Chairman Shou Weichun said decisively: We have taken the path of innovation! Hansheng will continue to rely on innovation to achieve its goal of becoming the world champion in the industry within one or two years.

Technological Innovation
Setting Sail in the Blue Ocean of Industry

Veteran Hansheng employees say that every step of Hansheng's growth has been achieved through persistent technological innovation and independent brands, through hard work.
Chairman Shou Weichun succinctly summarized Hansheng's innovation path: Hansheng's R&D cables targeted the broadcasting and television field in the 1990s, then the 3G mobile communication field in the new century, and now focus on high-speed rail and subway applications. Hansheng's innovation has always been closely linked to the times, always sailing in the blue ocean of the industry.
Since 1995, after nearly two years of efforts, Hansheng became the first domestic manufacturer to successfully use nitrogen to achieve physical high foaming, and applied this technology to the manufacture of high-quality cables needed for cable television network construction.
In 2000, Hansheng's 50-ohm coaxial cable for mobile communications was launched, causing great repercussions in China and internationally. It was determined that the product reached the advanced level of similar foreign products, leading in China, and could completely replace imports.
From 2005 to the present, Hansheng has successfully developed new products such as low-loss feeders for 3G, leaky coaxial cables, and coaxial cables with corrugated aluminum tape outer conductors. Recently, Hansheng's leaky cable successfully passed the strict acceptance test of the Swiss high-speed railway, and was successfully applied to the Alps tunnel, attracting great attention from international peers.
In the face of new economic and social trends, Hansheng has proposed "two shifts" (from seizing market share to comprehensively improving product quality, and from expanding production capacity to accelerating new product development) and "two improvements" (technology to international advanced levels, and market to high-end international fields), and formulated the "Three-Year Plan for Technological Innovation". Based on an investment of nearly 100 million yuan during the financial crisis, it plans to invest another 100 million yuan to increase the intensity of technological innovation and new product development, and advance into the high-speed rail and subway fields.
Today, Hansheng is one of the earliest domestic manufacturers to develop and successfully verify physically foamed coaxial cables and one of the main drafters of national communication coaxial cable industry standards. The Chinese team led by Hansheng has driven out the foreign teams in the communication coaxial cable field, occupying almost 100% of the domestic market, and successfully selling Chinese products into the hinterlands of developed countries in Europe and America.

Brand Innovation
From "Made in China" to "Created in China"

In addition to its excellent technology, Hansheng has another shining brand in the global cable industry: Hansheng products in the domestic market all use independent brands, and more than 50% of products exported to international markets use independent brands.
On several occasions, Shou Weichun mentioned a story about fish and eagles: When Shou Weichun was a child visiting the countryside, he saw villagers using fish eagles to catch fish. To prevent the fish eagles from swallowing large fish, they put a ring around the fish eagle's neck. He and Hansheng did not want to become fish eagles for foreign companies, did not want to be controlled by foreigners. With this in mind, from the first day of establishing the company, Shou Weichun has unswervingly advocated for independent brand products; in exports, Hansheng has gradually increased the proportion of its independent brands.
Years later, Shou Weichun often recalls the experience of Inner Mongolia Mobile being the first to use Hansheng brand coaxial feeders. At that time, despite his age, Shou Weichun personally climbed the base station to inspect and debug, proving that Hansheng cables could operate smoothly at minus 40 degrees Celsius, with the same quality assurance as European and American brands.
The successful operation of 8 base stations in Hailar made the "Hansheng" brand famous.
Before 2000, more than 90% of coaxial cables in China were monopolized by European and American companies, with high prices reaching more than 80 yuan per meter. Now, Hansheng's similar products are only more than 20 yuan per meter.
Hansheng brand coaxial cables enjoy a high reputation internationally, and its domestic market share has reached 30%. The brand has created the market. According to statistics, Hansheng achieved sales of 2.4 billion yuan in 2009, a year-on-year increase of 20%, and production output value increased by 65% year-on-year.
Shou Weichun said with emotion that at the beginning of his business, there were more than 30 cable companies in China engaged in OEM business, but now, after the storms, many are hard to find. However, Hansheng still stands proudly at the forefront, becoming today's largest coaxial cable manufacturer in Asia and the second largest in the world.
Hansheng is no longer a fish eagle with its neck constricted, but an eagle soaring in the world!

Cultural Innovation
A Constant Source of Living Water

At Hansheng, we hear many small stories:
——Hansheng's employee activity center has a college class, with 57 employees currently studying. The company invites teachers from the Open University to teach them every week. For employees who enroll, the company subsidizes 50% of the tuition fee, and after successfully passing the self-study examination and obtaining a diploma, the company will reimburse the other 50%. Shou Weichun said that some of these workers may leave Hansheng in the future, but it doesn't matter; what's important is that they are talented people in society. I just want to tell them that knowledge changes lives.
——Hansheng has invested heavily in building an art troupe for more than ten years, and the Hansheng art troupe has travelled throughout China, appeared on the Spring Festival Gala, performed in Jiuquan, and toured North Korea and Nepal with national leaders.
——Since 2002, the company has consistently sent hundreds of new university graduates, cadres, and core workers to military camps for rigorous military training every summer for eight consecutive years to cultivate employees' sense of discipline and teamwork.
Hansheng has held five group wedding ceremonies for more than 70 couples. The grand ceremonies included hundreds of guests, official witnesses, handsome and beautiful members of the art troupe serving as bridesmaids and groomsmen, full wedding attire, exquisite wedding photography, a motorcade parade, a grand wedding banquet, a dance party, generous company gifts, and finally, the newlyweds being escorted to their hotel rooms.
Hansheng held a "Red Song Concert" at the company, featuring songs such as: Defend the Yellow River; The Sparkling Red Star; Sing My Motherland; I Love China, I Love Zhuhai.
  …
The Hansheng Party Committee proposed that Hansheng should cultivate an atmosphere where employees feel a sense of accomplishment in their work, happiness in their lives, progress in their learning, and dignity in their existence.
Upon entering Hansheng, the first thing that catches the eye is a statue of Confucius standing quietly at the main entrance. Shou Weichun said this is to remind people to encourage learning, industry, and virtue.
Innovative cultural development has brought invaluable spiritual wealth and cultural accumulation.
Whenever major disasters occur, all Hansheng Party members, cadres, and employees actively donate. After the Wenchuan earthquake, Da Liu, a green worker, donated 1000 yuan as special party dues; Lao Huang, a canteen worker, also donated 1000 yuan; Song Ya, a member of the art troupe, was only 20 years old in 2008, she first donated 1000 yuan, then during the company's collective donation, the young girl donated more than 622 yuan, giving all the cash she had on her.
Shou Weichun said that the success of an enterprise requires core technology as well as core culture. Many century-old shops, both domestic and foreign, have their own cultural accumulation. The role of core culture is to ensure the long-term stability and prosperity of the enterprise. We call this shared cultural concept the soul of the enterprise. "Over the years, I have been less focused on running a business and more focused on cultivating a culture."
A constant stream of fresh talent—this is the secret to Hansheng's strong innovative capacity.

"Hansheng Philosophy" is the driving force for innovation

Hansheng is a company full of stories and thought-provoking moments.
Touring Hansheng, you will strongly feel the pervasive red atmosphere. Throughout the factory area, you can see inspiring and uplifting slogans and pictures. "Serving the people, fame and fortune should be as light as water; in economic construction, the cause should be more important than mountains," "Personal fame and fortune are as light as water, the Party's cause is as heavy as a mountain," "Carry forward the spirit of the Red Army's 25,000-mile Long March, and sound the horn of large-scale production," "High quality, high yield, low consumption, launch socialist labor competitions," "Pursue progress, cultivate character, learn art, and first learn to be a person"…
Walking through Hansheng, lush green trees and clean grounds; the small lake by the factory buildings is calm and serene, with pavilions and towers built among the willows by the lake, the island in the center of the lake is full of greenery, and pigeons are flying by. If it weren't for the factory walls next to it, everyone who sets foot here would feel like they're in a high-quality park.
From its inception, Hansheng established a party group and boldly declared, "Raise the red flag of the Party high at Hansheng!" For more than 20 years, Hansheng has consciously upheld and strengthened the core leadership of the Party organization, continuously exploring practical innovations in combining corporate culture with grassroots Party building. In 2006, the Hansheng Party Committee was awarded the title of "National Advanced Grassroots Party Organization" by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.
Hansheng established its values early on: "If you don't contribute, I don't contribute, who will? If you demand, I demand, from whom do we demand?"
From Hansheng's 25-year history, we see a Hansheng of technology: pursuing technological breakthroughs and leading application trends. We also see a Hansheng of culture: respecting every employee, respecting human creativity, respecting human initiative, and closely integrating it with the company's development.
Hansheng is not conservative, nor is it complacent. Hansheng places people at the heart of its business and, around this core, has cultivated a corporate culture of dedication, mutual trust, mission, and unity, thereby fully mobilizing people's enthusiasm, promoting technological innovation, and achieving corporate goals. It uses innovative cultural development to inspire and respect people, not to restrict or confine them. This is the Hansheng philosophy.
The story of Hansheng presents a picture where an innovative corporate culture nurtures innovative mechanisms, innovative mechanisms protect the company's innovative impetus, and this in turn forms the company's core competitiveness.
"An enterprise without cultural nourishment is like a body without a soul; corporate culture is also a productive force." Shou Weichun, nearing seventy years old, spoke these words; this is not only the business experience of an entrepreneur but also the reflection of a traditional Chinese intellectual on people and the world.
