Hansheng's Counterattack

From a small factory producing OEM products to the second largest and Asia's largest manufacturer of radio frequency coaxial cables globally, how did Zhuhai Hansheng achieve its counterattack? The reporter came to Hansheng Technology Co., Ltd. in the Xinqing Science and Technology Industrial Park in Doumen, Zhuhai, to find the answer.
In the exhibition hall on the first floor, the reporter saw various sizes of cable products. Shou Weichun, chairman and secretary of the Party committee, said that climbing the peak of technology and creating a strong brand are the foundation. This chairman, who is from a technical background, introduced the products with great enthusiasm.
Shou Weichun introduced that, in terms of technology, the company's main products—coaxial cables—have gone through several stages, including "solid core polyethylene insulation," "chemically foamed polyethylene insulation," "lotus root core polyethylene insulation," and "physically foamed polyethylene insulation." In 1995, Hansheng was the first in China to successfully use nitrogen for physical high foaming, and used this technology to produce high-quality cables for cable television network construction, making the products have higher transmission rates, lower attenuation, and better performance. In 2000, Hansheng successfully developed physically high-foamed large-section coaxial cables for use in mobile communication base stations. Among them, the technology for producing large-section physically foamed cables filled a domestic gap and reached the international advanced level.
Today, the ever-unsatisfied Hansheng has overcome the difficulties of Class A++ cables and successfully seized the high-end European market. Jin Jiafeng, deputy chief engineer of Hansheng, told the reporter that in the summer of 2013, at an IEC international academic conference held in Europe, experts attending the meeting first proposed the problem of effective transmission of cable signals in complex electromagnetic environments and at higher operating frequencies. "We smelled the demand of this high-end market, so we came back to organize the research and development of related supporting products. Since neither the products nor the test methods had yet formed international standards, we went to Germany to communicate with the secretary of the subcommittee of IEC on this type of product about the product roadmap and test plan, and we jointly studied with technical experts from Spain and Italy."
Li Qiuyuan, who graduated in 2013, was the person in charge of the Class A++ cable project. He told the reporter that there were many difficulties in the research and development process; conventional materials could not meet the standards, and many kinds of aluminum foil were used. More than a dozen schemes were produced, countless experiments were conducted, and 400 cables were used. Finally, in 2014, the world's first set of test equipment capable of testing cable shielding characteristics according to the latest IEC standards was debugged at Hansheng. At the same time, Hansheng's production technology and quality control reached the world's leading level, and orders came one after another. By 2015, Hansheng's Class A++ single product sales had exceeded 7 million US dollars.
With only technology and no own brand, the product cannot create higher value. Shou Weichun told the reporter that when he was a child visiting the countryside, he saw villagers using trained birds to fish. To prevent the birds from swallowing large fish, they would put a ring around the bird's neck. "This image left a deep impression on me. Hansheng cannot be a trained bird, and cannot have its neck throttled by foreign companies." Shou Weichun said that with this in mind, from the first day of establishing the company, Shou Weichun was determined not to be satisfied with OEM, but to develop an independent brand.
In the interview, Shou Weichun mentioned Hansheng's first order more than once. At that time, Inner Mongolia Mobile was the first company to use Hansheng-branded coaxial feeder lines. At that time, Shou Weichun, despite his age, personally climbed a 60-meter base station for inspection and debugging to prove that Hansheng cables could operate smoothly in an environment of minus 40 degrees Celsius, with the same quality assurance as European and American brands. The successful operation of eight base stations in Hailar made the Hansheng brand famous throughout the world.
After successfully establishing its brand, Hansheng turned its attention to new industries and new products. For the rapid development of subways and high-speed railways, Hansheng developed leakage cables and an independently developed leakage cable simulation test system, whose test accuracy is 10 times higher than that of similar international products. The products not only successively won bids for domestic high-speed rail public network coverage projects, but also emerged in international projects including the Alps tunnel project. At present, Hansheng's leakage cables have secured the top position in the domestic market share.
“When we started our business, there were more than 30 cable companies in China engaged in OEM business. After the elimination of the unfit, today, most of these companies are hard to find, while Hansheng still stands proudly at the forefront.” Shou Weichun is deeply gratified by this. “In 2015, our company achieved sales revenue of 1.724 billion yuan, and foreign exports increased by 14%. He confidently stated, “Hansheng will continue to move forward and strive to become the world champion in the cable industry within one or two years.”
