Shou Weichun: Thirty Years on the Frontline, Forging a Path for Chinese National Industry

There is an elderly gentleman, a technician by background, who came to Zhuhai in his prime. Now, though his hair has grayed, his accent remains unchanged. He led a small OEM factory to become one of the most powerful manufacturers of cable television cables and communication optical cables. His main products have led the domestic industry in sales for over a decade, forging a path with Chinese characteristics for national industry. Today's report on "Patriotic Feelings, Strivers" will look at the story of Shou Weichun, Chairman of Zhuhai Hansheng Technology Co., Ltd.

Reporter: Where have you spent the most time—your office or the workshop?

Shou Weichun: The office. I'm getting older; I can't handle spending long hours in the workshop.

Shou Weichun, now 77, still goes to work every day. In the 34 years since Hansheng was founded, he has never stopped working, even on holidays or when ill. He grew up in Shanghai and, after graduating university in 1964, worked there, rising from technician to senior engineer. In 1984, with a strong belief and a spirit of striving, he set off for Zhuhai, a special economic zone, to start a business.

Shou Weichun: Back then, Zhuhai was a blank slate, truly a blank slate.

After 4 pm in what is now the bustling Jida area,

including Jingshan Road and Jiuzhou Avenue, there were almost no people; it was very desolate.

Zhuhai city leaders told us,

that if the reform and opening up policy persisted, we would have everything.

Based on that single sentence, we were full of confidence in Zhuhai.

In March 1985, Zhuhai Hansheng Technology Co., Ltd. was established. Shou Weichun personally oversaw everything, from company management to landscaping. Employees describe him as simple, frugal, serious, and self-disciplined. In his office, the desk and chairs are the same ones from when Hansheng was founded over 30 years ago. Shou Weichun believes that things should be used as long as they work, but he spares no expense in purchasing advanced equipment for research. He overcame difficult conditions and significant financial pressure when establishing Hansheng.

Shou Weichun: When I came in January 1985, I brought two people from Shanghai.

The three of us men rented a farmer's house,

about 8 square meters, very dark; we used the outside hall as an office.

Loans, on the one hand, had high interest rates and short deadlines.

In other words, the project had to be absolutely certain to succeed.

The time given was about three years; there was no room for failure.

Shou Weichun, a three-time recipient of Zhuhai's Science and Technology Award, a Guangdong Provincial Model Worker, a National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, and a recipient of a special government allowance from the State Council, has spent over 30 years working tirelessly to revitalize China's national industry and catch up with world-leading standards. He uses enterprise red culture construction as the core, holding one to two party organization activities each month, cultivating key personnel into party members, and forging party members into role models.

Reporter: This book, "Dedicate Everything to the Party," is a copy you made yourselves?

Shou Weichun: Yes, we reprinted it ourselves.

Because the book was no longer available.

We contacted the Central Party Building Leading Group,

and they sent us about 12 copies.

Reporter: About how many copies did you reprint?

Shou Weichun: At least two hundred copies; one for each party member and cadre.

Today, Zhuhai Hansheng Technology Co., Ltd. has made its mark in 5G communication, 4K high-definition networks, rail transit signal coverage, high-end test lines, data centers, and new energy smart vehicles, with several patented technologies at the forefront. The company has independently developed a leakage cable and simulation test system with leading test accuracy, holding a leading market share in China and exporting products overseas, growing into a core enterprise in China's communication cable industry.

Reporter: How do you understand this?

Shou Weichun: I'm just an ordinary person.

I grew up under the nurturing of the Party.

The Party taught us to love our country, our people, science, and labor.

I feel that my life is a gift from the country and the Party.

The country has created so many opportunities for me

Now the whole country is developing

Zhuhai is the leading one among several special economic zones

It is precisely because several special economic zones took the lead in opening up and reforming
